The mountainous terrain and remote locations around Allenspark significantly reduce (and in some areas, eliminate) AFPD firefighters’ ability to communicate clearly with our current emergency radios. Our radios are several years old, and many were purchased second-hand. They will last five to six years at most. Additionally, all our radios do not use the same programming system, which causes difficulties when channels must be changed on every radio.
The technology to solve this problem exists but comes with a hefty price tag ($2,500 for each individual radio). The new radios will last 10 to 15 years and will all be on the same system, greatly improving communications. The AFPD needs about 34 radios and will take advantage of bulk purchasing discounts. We will also sell the ones we now have and apply any money from those sales to the new radios.
The Allenspark Area Club Board of Directors agreed to host a large-scale, community wide fund-raising effort to help the AFPD overcome these emergency radio problems.
Please consider sponsoring a radio for a firefighter or making whatever donation you can. Any amount will help and will be greatly appreciated.
